Shanghai - China

Shanghai is the second largest city in China, after Beijing. In the last 30 years, this city, which has a population of 13 million inhabitants, has developed into the economic centre of China. Shanghai's economy is growing faster, more high-rise buildings are being built, and more businesses are being founded than anywhere else in the world. This is a city that is constantly growing, booming and bustling with activity.

In the 19th century, this former fishing village developed into an economically significant city. With its favourable position on the East China Sea at the mouth of the Yangtse River, Shanghai Harbour constantly takes on more and more importance, especially as more Europeans come to China. Along with other large seaports such as Hong Kong and Macao, Shanghai has become an important trade centre and is seen as something of a gate to China.

After the Anglo-Chinese War in the early 19th century, British officials temporarily had control of Shanghai. There are many buildings and constructions dating back to the Colonial era that have been well preserved, such as the harbour promenade, Puxi. These constructions all date back to after the Anglo-Chinese war. In addition to the traditional buildings, there are also modern high-rise buildings and office blocks, as can be seen in the Pudong neighbourhood for example.
