Cairns - Australia
Cairns is characterised by miles and miles of sandy beaches, breathtaking scenery, great weather, friendly and open people, and the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns was founded in 1876 by one of Queensland’s former Governors. The purpose of the town originally was to provide provisions to the gold fields, but over the years Cairns and its surrounding areas developed into one of Australia’s most important tourist areas. Cairns has a great deal to offer its visitors. Two of its main attractions are the Great Barrier Reef and the world’s oldest rainforests.
Cairns is great place to visit for all people, but it is particularly good for all people who love the outdoors and people who love diving. The amazing underwater world of the world’s greatest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef, is just waiting to be discovered.

The Diantree Rainforest, which remains one of the most intact rainforests, is also a must see. Further highlights include the Skytrain to Kuranda, which offers great views of the entire region; and stunning lakes and waterfalls in Tablelands.
Cairns has a population of 120,000 inhabitants. It has just the right size for people to enjoy the relaxed life style of a small town, but at the same time it is also big enough so people can enjoy all the comforts that a modern town has to offer. It is hardly surprising that Cairns with its tropical climate is one of the three most popular destinations in Australia among people who want to study English.
