The Lynch family governed the history of Galway through several centuries, and over 80 members of the family were, at one point or another, Mayor of Galway. One of the most famous was James Lynch, who executed his own son for the crime of murder in 1493 because no executioner would put to death a member of the powerful family. Supposedly the verb "lynch" traces its roots back to this story.

Not far inland from Galway begins the mountain landscape of Connemara with its green hills, beige moors, and blue mountain lakes. Off the coast are the Aran Islands, which are definitely worth a visit for a glimpse of its rocky shores. In Salthill, a suburb of Galway, you'll find a long, sandy beach inviting you to go swimming.
