Lyon - France

Lyon has a population of approximately 1.3 million inhabitants and is the third largest city in France. It is situated at the point where the rivers Rhône and Saône meet. The historical city centre with its magnificent buildings was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998. Some of Lyon’s architecture is truly stunning, like the Cathedral Saint-Jean and the Basilika Notre Dame de Fourvières which overlooks the entire city.
Lyon is world-famous for its exquisite cuisine - you can enjoy traditional French cooking in all its richness here. In the area around Lyon you can find famous wine-growing regions like Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône.

The city also has many cultural delights to offer. It has more than 30 museums, many theatres and an opera house. At the end of the 19th century, the first film of the world by the Brothers Lumière was shot in Lyon. Lyon was also the hometown of the famous French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry ("Le Petit Prince" or "The Little Prince"), after whom the airport is also named.
