Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. It has a population of approximately 400,000 inhabitants. Florence is also known as the ‘Pearl of Tuscany’. The city combines a rich history, with modern beauty and stunning landscapes. Florence is surrounded by Tuscany’s green hills which are a great place to relax at weekends. They are also home to the famous Chianti wines.

Florence was most significant during the time of the Medici, who as a powerful merchant family had considerable influence on the city in the early 1400's. Several of the city's palaces and buildings from its cultural heyday remain today. The cathedral, the Uffizi buildings and the Palazzo Vecchio are some of the most famous remnants. The Medici family did not just influence the city of Florence, though; Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were also a huge influence. It is mainly due to their influence that the city came to understand how to relate commerce, science and art to one another, thus establishing the birth of the Renaissance period. Today over a third of all Italian art treasures are located in Florence.

So, why not study Italian at our Italian school in Florence and discover this beautiful city for yourself!
