Krakow - Poland

Krakow was the capital of the kingdom of Poland for over 500 years and is today still considered Poland's other capital city. With 18 universities, Krakow is the academic centre of Poland. As a result of its large student community, the European Cultural Capital of 2000 has a vibrant nightlife including a multitude of bars, restaurants and clubs. If you study Polish at our Polish school in Krakow you can be sure to be in for a fun time.

Krakow has a population of 750,000 inhabitants and is the financial and technological centre of Poland. However, despite all this activity the cost of living in Krakow is still noticeable lower than in most other large cities in Poland.

Krakow looks back on a very long history. The cityscape is characterised by buildings from various eras, and the historic city centre surrounding the famous Rynek Glowny marketplace has a mixture of buildings from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque time periods. As a result of its beautiful historic, bourgeois buildings, castles and cathedrals the city centre was declared a World Heritage Sit by UNESCO in 1978. One of the most well-known buildings is the Wawel Cathedral with its 20 chapels.

Part of Krakow’s cultural heritage are 16 theatres where over 3,500 performances and concerts are held each year and the city's 40 annual festivals, all of which helped contribute to Krakow's election as the European Cultural Capital 2000.
