Cuba
Cuba is located in the heart of the American Mediterranean at the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico. The endearing "Grande Dame" of the Caribbean lies like a cigar between the fingers of Florida and the Yucatán Peninsula. As the largest island in the Caribbean, Cuba has over 200 bays and 300 natural beaches, characterised by fine white sand and crystal clear, turquoise blue water. Cuba's passionate culture has developed from Caribbean, African and Spanish roots. Cuba’s population of approximately 11 million inhabitants are descendents of various Antilles, African, Asian, and European peoples. One thing you can be sure of in Cuba is that you will meet locals quickly and easily.
During a visit to the old city centre of Havana, be sure to stop at the fortress Castillo de la Real Fuerza, the famous palaces Palacio de los Capitanes Generales and Palacio del Segundo Cabo and El Templete.
Equally worth seeing is the Catedral de La Habana, which looks over the city with its uneven towers and Baroque façade that was built in the style of Italian architect Francesco Borromini. At the edge of the Plaza de la Catedral is the Palacio de los Marquesas de Aguas Claras from the year 1760.
A large number of museums, the most important being the Museo de la Ciudad, the Museo de Arte Colonial, and the Museo Casa Natal de José Martí, and many different cultural institutions as well as restaurants, cafés, and several plazas characterise Havana's cityscape. Cigar lovers cannot miss La Casa del Habano, a cigar museum and salesroom. Just as interesting is the Real Fábrica de Tabacos Partagás, one of Havana's oldest cigar factories.
