Puerto de Santa Maria - Spain

undefined

This small, picturesque town in the Bay of Cádiz is situated at the mouth of the Guadalete River and has all the typical Andalusian features: sun, ocean, tradition, Flamenco, bullfights, and friendly and welcoming inhabitants.

Puerto de Santa María became famous due to Christopher Columbus. Before his first expedition, Columbus spent more than a year in this city carefully preparing for his trip. Upon departure, he named one of his ships the "Santa Maria," after the town and was accompanied by many sailors from the city. Today, a trip around the coast on a replica of the "Niña" reminds tourists of this event.

Another famous person from this city was the 20th century writer Rafael Alberti. His often-political works also helped to make Puerto de Santa María famous all over the world.

There are more than 15 kilometres of beach, a beautiful harbour, the sun always shines, and there are also countless palaces; El Puerto de Santa María is also called the "City of 100 Palaces".
