The old university city of Granada looks back on an animated history. In 1492, the over 700-year rule of Arabs in Spain came to an end, along with the Moorish rule of Granada. The Alhambra, one of the sultan's famous palaces and one of Europe's most significant architectural structures, then fell into the hands of Granada's new Catholic rulers. Along with the Alhambra and its renowned gardens, there are innumerable remains in Granada from the Moorish era. In particular, the Albaycín neighbourhood is worth a visit.

Another significant area of town is the Sacromonte area, the Flamenco capital. This part of the city is primarily inhabited by Sinti and Roma, whose singers and dancers disseminated Flamenco throughout Spain with their triumphal procession.

The conjunction of Arabian and European architecture and traditions makes Granada one of Spain's most beautiful cities. In addition, this city of 280,000 inhabitants has a great geographical location. In the north is the Sierra Nevada, Europe's southern most winter sports region, and about 30 kilometres south of Granada are the golden beaches of Costa del Sol.
